Putting a Lid on Summer at the Final NYAF

September 21st, 2009

I don’t think NYAF is going to go away, but its merger with NYCC really just means, in business talk term, a merger of a larger with a smaller. It also doesn’t help that NYCC has a significant Japan-culture track already. And you know what that means.

At any rate, because I just don’t have much time lately to watch that much anime (let alone write), this is just a filler post about how maybe some of you might like to be aware that I am going to NYAF. I just hope all the freeloaders at my place will not cause any problems (lol). And while I am sort of ambivalent about most of the guests at NYAF this year, I think Yui Makino occupies an interest space being a vocalist that turns voice acting. There are also reasons to get excited about seeing Tomino again, too.

Basically, if you see me at the con, please come and say hello.

This summer was a frantic one for me. To share a personal realization–the most “gripping” watch for me this past couple months is Aoi Hana and Yokuwakaru Gendai Mahou. It isn’t because I enjoy them so much more than any of the other shows that I have been trying to keep up with, but I often find myself tuned to those shows as soon as they were made available on CR. I suppose part of it was that it is somewhat easier to watch anime streaming when you are traveling instead of downloading a traditional fansub but also because there’s just enough about each of those two shows that push me onward and make me want it. I probably won’t pick either of them as my favorite of this season or even recommend them casually to anyone… It’s just strange how I’ve fallen behind some other shows, but not on these two.

Well, Aoi Hana is a solid anime, no question. It just isn’t similar to The Best Anime This Season, in the way that as the kids say, relevant to my interests. Although I think if not for the production-schedule slip observed in NadekoBakemonogatari 10, that show would give all of the baseball talk a run for their money.

Which is to say, man, some of those dream sequences in Love Plus are funky.

    I’ll be attending N.Y.A.F. for my first time this year, and I am pretty excited. Hopefully things go well, and the merger with Comic-con next year may be a little bit to large for my tastes, but you never know!

    Yea, there are some big positives about the merger, for sure. One I’m looking forward to is having bigger guests and more focused anime-related programming.

    hm i didn’t think of this being the last “NYAF” but yea I guess since it’s “merging” with NYCC…but I thought NYAF and NYCC would still be “separated”? Guess not ?_? I dunno anymore.

    I’ll be in Friday night & Saturday. Probably skipping sunday. Im only coming friday for the AMV contest since I’m an entrant :)

    Don’t worry omo I won’t bring any of my hug pillows with me, you’re safe.

    @Hinano: they could be still separate, but since you buy the same pass for both and go to the same con hall for both and use the same dealer’s room, what difference does it make anymore…

    @wah: Oh I’m always safe……..

    I don’t know if the Del Rey manga people are the right ones to pester about this, but you could encourage them to step up the publication frequency of the Zaregoto novels (and maybe Faust). Or at least ask them what the strategy is behind the rather slow release schedule (not crowding things off decreasing bookshelf space, I assume).

    Alternatively, ask them about the chances of Bakemonogatari and Katanagatari?

    Be sure to thank them for Moyashimon.

    I’m curious as to how well the light novels they’re publishing are doing.

    If I ever make it to their panel, I will focus on light novel questions indeed (it’s all I buy from them more or less…)
