Otakon 2009: Day 0, 1, MELL in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hands

July 18th, 2009

I can’t take credit with coming up with the blog post title, but it’s just her songs were in my mouth, honest!

Unlike Kalafina, I realized my lack of MELL-fu, one of the founding vocalist of I’ve Sound…vocals. So what’s that, 1 down and 2 left? I would have rattled off a set list, because it was short, if I knew all her songs. I think I can tell you some of them: Proof, no vain, kicks, kill, Permit…a handful of others. It was a short set overall. Encore was Rideback and Virgin’s High.

Otakon has been a blast so far. And for once things are different in some major ways. Not quite Sengoku Barasa level of awesome though.

The New Hilton is New. It is pretty niiiiiice. I almost envy those of you who are staying there, paying the same fees I pay for my old-school-Otakon-dig Day’s Inn. I think the Inn still is the closest cheap stay around, though.

The new panel rooms, autograph areas and manga cafe is sparse, people are just getting to know where there are now as they’re relocated in the Hilton. Despite the same dealer’s room line screwup I think they did a good job this year.

This is more a day 0 thing, and a negative, but the pre-reg line this year was long. The time it took to get pre-regged on Thursday evening (7pm? 10pm?) was easily 90 minutes. That’s almost double what it was last year.

The dealer’s room is more packed than usual? And it’s pretty good stuff this year.

There’s also a little thing about going as press this time as opposed to prior years, but whatever.

I’ll try to post a lot more on Yamakan over at Jtor, because he’s interesting and has a lot of con appearance. I missed out on a couple of them already though, sadly.

But Bayoab is hard at work so we don’t have to…sort of. Well, at least the Bandai Surprise this year was something I can live without, compared to pumping fist in the sky like a virgin’s high you know what I’m saying. Or last year’s JamPro appearance. Boo.

Most memorable moment for me this year was meeting the other Jtor guys, Gia, and standing in line with Paranda, Alexd00, and TheBigN each wearing an anisong band shirt in the MELL line (MOSAIC.WAV, Puffy Amiyumi, JamPro, and I wore Nana Mizuki). There were other cool kids in there too, like Kannagi OP Dance Star W-General, lol. Oh hai Morithel!

And yea, there was a wardrobe malfunction with MELL. I saw it. Well.

Time to rinse and repeat, g’night.

I kind of disagree about the Hilton… it looks like a professional hotel and all, but it’s too big. I don’t have to walk that far anywhere else in Otakon; it reminds me of wandering about Dragon*Con in Atlanta (always a terrible experience without hiking boots).

Also you totally just upstaged my post; maybe I really should be taking notes.

It is big, yeah. But walking is fine for my urban crawling lifestyle :3

I have it, but it’s from my craptastic phone cam. I’ll toss it to you via email in a couple days (promise!) once I’m done sorting through all my Otakon crap.
