Rage Against the Book Cover, Perverted Ones

April 1st, 2009

I write in an unhealthy, verbose manner, but this sums up my feeling, year in and year out, about approaching new anime on a seasonal basis, with more feeling than I can ever imbue within a bunch of words. So I echo.

It’s definitely important to call out and evaluate stuff that is detrimental, but at the same time one should avoid making statements they regret doing. Perhaps bloggers innately play with fire on this subject out of our extroverted, impulsive nature, it is no less excusable. Maybe that is why digitalboy ended up posting a list anyways. Maybe that is why I’m writing about what he’s writing about.

Sure, we all have to make a judgment call regards to what anime to watch (unforced). For those of us who follow anime by the seasons that naturally means going through the list and pluck off those we will download or watch off TV or whatever, and those we ignore, sight unseen. I find it that it’s just better to not say anything about shows you’re not likely going to bother, unless there’s something to be said about it.

Like Queen’s Blade. I mean, in some twisted way, the designs for all the girls are top notch, Takashi Murakami (superflat) be damned kind of thing. It’s like the Lonesome Cowboy. And I’m kind of glad (in the sad, un-Christian way) that they’re making a line of PVC figures for it, in the same semen lasso style. Well, almost the same, if you reduce the amount of po-mo sarcasm and increase the amount of sensual gratification. I suppose that just makes it more awkward to display in your house if you have friends over? On the bright side, nothing about Queen’s Blade is going to be $15M.

Or maybe I shun away from speaking about stuff like Queen’s Blade out of respect of “playing pervy games starting in the afternoon is also evil” train of thought. Queen’s Blade is pervy. As pervy as a game book could be anyways. Now we’re talking about judging a book by its cover, amirite?

On the other hand, while I like speaking well of shows sight unseen, I tend to speak well of them in actuality only after seeing at least a glimpse. I already splooged on Eden of the East. A good trailer goes a long way to promote a show. And it’s clear that’s all I have to stand on right now, besides some (unfair) unfair notion of “looking forward” that anyone who knows who are behind the production can look forward to seeing. It is also good to hear about Saori Hayami playing the Hagu-Ayami character, because her performance from Touka Gettan (and every other role since then, really) is just my kind of moe. Srsly, the next Mamiko Noto right here.

Well, back into my end-of-fiscal-quarter hell I go.

I feel like I’ve truly accomplished something. I’m going to brag to my friends.

Seasonal anime previews are about informing the readers. I highlight important features regardless of my interest in a series. I mention my opinion about anime that caught my interest, but I don’t say much beyond basics about shows that don’t fit my taste. For example, Queen’s Blade has a good cast that is worth mentioning, but I’ll pass on this anime.

Dead sharks are not art :P

P.S. I like the image you selected for this post :)

Kitsune: And what you do is great. But most people sadly don’t do that, and just end up telling us less about the show and more about why they’ll watch or not watch a show based on shallow first impressions. Or something like that.
