Xam’d Episode 18 - Scrapped Princesses

December 10th, 2008

Will the real princess please stand up?

Is it Haru?

Or Nakiami?

Or is it…

Kujireika is really guilt-tripping Nakiami in this episode. The supposed focus for this episode is Nakiami and how her home town folks reacting to her return. Her younger sister really took it hard. I mean, sure, she is a 100% Tessik mumbo jumbo type, but 3 Hiruko? That’s nuts.

That shot also answers how the hell do the clothes Nakiami wears works. Weird Tessik women’s clothes. I suppose it’s like a bone to the cosplayers.

The Tessik village is rather large, and it’s scenic to be sure. A mild-weather zone in the bitter heights of the northern mountains, a not-so-secret but well-guarded land. The responsibility to lead its people landed on Kujireika when it is revealed that Nakiami, who went by the name Tenjo, was chosen to be Lady Sannova’s … servant or something? It’s unclear, but once every 20 years, a special child will be chosen to do something for Sannova. It seems that Nakiami was that child. What happened since she left Tessik land is unclear. Anyways, for some reason, Nakiami left the place. Consequently her parents died, and Kujireika took over.

It’s a gloomy affair, but Yango keeps Nakiami smiling at least.

Totally out of Scrapped Princess.

And that is not chocolate. Or century egg. It’s some kind of condensed Xam’d mojo made of HUMANS. No, I exaggerate. But it is some kind of Xam’d mojo which Kujireika will manufacture in order to protect the land from southern encroachment and to fight the Northern empire’s ambition in regards to the upcoming Xam’d convention. Xam’d con you say? It’s that prophetic stuff Azami was ranting about in the prior episodes. Something about souls being devoured.

Nakiami has a lot to think about. I hope that fancy nice bed helps her think. That’s probably a runner up for this episode’s gadget check!

The winner? Furuichi’s bike.

To be honest, the real focus for episode 18 is Haru. She smiles, she cries, she plays Solid Snake, she plays Nazuna’s bedside visitor. She even talks to her old CO and gets a word of encouragement.

And thus, she begins her journey to escape Senkan Island.

While carrying precious cargo from Dr. Ryuzo.

What is it? MAJOR PLOT DEVICE DUN DUN DUN.

Gadget check runner up #2 - cute pocket compass. Or map? You decide.

Meanwhile, Haru has a fallout with Midori. It is as if the circle repeats itself between her and Furuichi. Midori, oh poor girl. I hope that silly girl get a grip.

After so long, we finally got a couple scenes with the Zanbani crew.

Gadget check runner up #3 - water system. It would be awesome if it was a purification system, but it wasn’t clear from seeing the show. The ship crashed near the coast so they were hauling up sea water. Yunbo was using the water that comes out of the system to do the dishes, so I don’t know.

Meanwhile Raigyou is talking to Zeygend about getting some weapons. Is he going to war, along with Ishu?

Akiyuki’s side of the story doesn’t get much farther either. He still can’t remember his name, but he knows he have to. The eyeball seems to be linked to Akiyuki directly, that much is clear. How is it linked? Is it doing all the eating for him? I don’t know.

If I had to pick, this episode is a total build-up episode. The next episode preview says as much, clearly:

I can’t wait.
