NYAF Day 3 - Camaraderie, Hope, Perseverance: A Story about a Rose
Despite the lofty title, it’s almost the full extent of what I will say about the fun memories I managed to escape with from NYAF 2008 day 3. Let’s just say that it’s all caught on candid video and I have to thank Mike of Anime Diet for that. Thanks Mike!
A big reason why I don’t want to share it here is because, well, you had to be there to really appreciate it. Long story short, but yours truly, pitiful enough as is, got the sympathy of some NYAF guest management staff and sneaked in something fun for Rie Tanaka. I suppose now is a time to mention something about twitter, but I’m going to go hush-hush on beyond that (but you are welcomed to ask me if you see me). Big thanks to NYAF’s guest team for helping it come true, at least as much as Tanaka’s management would allow. Maybe Moy can weave a more compelling narrative of the events? If you were there, you’ve got permission :)
But it’s the memories of the shenanigans at anime cons that makes it worth remembering. And heck, I go to con to chase guests, not to goof off! I suppose I’m fairly kimo-ota about some guests that just by seeing them on stage would’ve sent me high, but that’s not Rie Tanaka for me at all.
The main motivation and all of the programming happening today at NYAF, for me personally, is just to “experience” Rie Tanaka. I did go to her panel and got a recording, so I will post about that in the coming days. Compared to the average Japanese voice guest, she is a great, fun personality in an environment like this. I think there’s also good rapport going on at the panel between her and the exuberant fans. At the same time the management of the panel and stuff really could use more work… Well, no harm no foul, I suppose.
Someone better post that group picture they took at the end of the panel…
(During the various line-waits and in-between-event down times, we were wondering about that TOP SECRET panel in the program book. It turns out that, despite our speculation, it was suppose to be a surprise Rie Tanaka panel. Unfortunately she just got in Friday night and needed time to rehearse for Saturday’s performance, so it got canned for that. They really need not put that picture from the Dragon Ball movie there…)
Other than that, I had to go to the con early to get autograph tickets, so it was quite unpleasant. Early being 5:30am wake-up time. And what’s worse was that 5:30 is not early enough :(
The day went by fairly fast as most of us beat a hasty retreat by around 2pm after another round at Go Go Curry. They had some kind of movie/video set going on there so we ate next to a bunch of ambient light lamp things. It was Jabel (this seiyuu otaku I run into at various cons), Mike and Moy that tagged up after my lol adventure with a rose. I wonder what happened to that one Japanese fan who flew from Osaka to see her…
Sadly, no Morimoto’s after party for omo. Maybe next time.
Loot:
See Flickr for cosplays, some more Rie pics, and others. All 3 days worth.

Epic writing of the events, at least in bad moyism story telling, on it’s way!
You’re welcome, omo. :) Your videos are in the mail!
So that was the secret panel. I should have known.
I will be telling the rose story in tomorrow’s installment of my wrapup post about NYAF.
thanks again :)
I really wish I could have made it. Sounds like it was a good time, except that 5:30AM on a weekend thing.
Found a nice pic: http://lol/IMG_1576.jpg
Lucky guy :)
Benson: lol. I think Moy posted a warning about those pics (pardon me while I go right click save as…) so I’m going to edit your comment for the link.
@super rats: yes it was. well, NOW it seems like it was a good time, but it didn’t at first.
Actually I *need* those photos so we can shoot them over to Rie Tanaka’s staff.
It’s all good though, already contacted the guy who contacted her staff about the photo. Hoping we can get a better quality one though, if Benson is game.
Why is there a problem with those pics being posted publicly? They’re not mine BTW.
I found that particular one on the NYAF forums: http://www.newyorkanimefestival.yuku.com/topic/837/t/The-2008-NYAF-quot-Post-Your-Pictures-quot-Thread.html
Post #7.
Will we see the pics that Rie took? :(
Oh, so that’s what you mean. What is it for anyways?
Nah it’s fine but it’s pretty much as I said on my blog. They’re just looking for photos for I assume to post for their blog or whatever they plan to use it for. And while there’s nothing wrong with posting publicly, it’s nice to credit the right individual(s) when possible.
