Pantless Holiday Treat
I really needed this vacation. But that aside–
Unlike cheap Asian pastry based on imported concepts (eg. cone-shaped bread with chocolate filling), a nice serving of Häagen-Dazs ice cream provides a much more, say, internationally accepted definition of deliciousness. It’s just not that cheap considering one chocochoronet is roughly $2-3 USD here, and a pint of the strawberry stuff normally is about $4-5. I get the feeling Shiki had less than that in her container.
Anyways, a vital part of ice cream’s appeal is its seasonal nature. It makes a perfect, if overdone, summertime treat. Kids all over the world knows what this is, pretty much.
Despite the fact that I never visited Tokyo proper (and discounting my Narita layovers) I know it’s freaking humid and hot there in the summer. What happens when you eat your Häagen-Dazs out of the carton that you took out of your freezer in that humid environment? Condensation.
I’m presuming Shiki’s not a big fan of air conditioning with the way she dresses for bed.
Uh, no pun intended there.
If ice-based frozen snacks are the alternative to dairy-based frozen snack, I guess you’d pick ice (like an icicle or Italian ice) when you’re thirsty and ice cream when you are not? Shiki probably wasn’t thirsty since it was raining at the time she stumbled home.
Anyways, considering her relatively blemish-free upbringing, Shiki probably had good complexion despite the feeling to the contrary. Doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman, if you don’t take care of your skin you’re likely to not keep it smooth sans some powerful genes. Maybe Shiki has those?
She’s certainly not wearing any?
Skin is important because it’s key to calculate traction caused by friction. Briefly, the amount of force normal to the surface, multiplied by the coefficient of friction (which, thankfully, is a type of voodoo blackbox for easily 99.9999+% of the world’s population) determines friction. Why is this important?
One thing that separates Häagen-Dazs from other mass-marketed brands is its high quality ingredients and a relatively well-packaged (especially kept at a low temperature due to its lower melting point compared to most other brands) container. Sometimes it can be a pain to tear off the protective plastic covering under the cardboard top. If you are familiar with the scene from Kara no Kyoukai episode 1 (it’s been a good 9 months since it first screened, and about 5 months since it came out on DVD… but it’s only summer-hot since just a couple months ago?), you would recall as much.
But was it physically possible? I mean, it’s right out of the freezer, it’s cold, slippery, and maybe a little wet from the humidity. Perhaps Shiki’s thighs were particularly gripping from its opened pores and softer texture because she just exited the shower/bath before this scene? We can presume Shiki is also very strong (everywhere), but to do so single-handedly require not just strength, but balance and dexterity. A brutish attempt will merely remove the container from between her legs.
Indeed, this is why our animators at ufotable storyboarded so that she uses her teeth to remove the plastic wrapping. They pass the crane kick test that PA Works didn’t quite pass.
And even so, it is not something that always work out so flawlessly. Häagen-Dazs tend to use better plastic so it will less likely to fray; you still have to apply the right amount of force.
It’s this kind of attention to detail that makes wonderful fan service, ice cream or otherwise.

See I thought this would be about Strike Witches.
I’ll give this a shot and send you the video.
Wow, I think thats the most I’ve ever read about the art of opening a ice cream carton with one hand. When I saw this scene, I didn’t catch the authenticity of Shiki’s opening of the ice cream.
lulz, I didn’t realize i’d clicked over to the animanachronism, though I seem to be glad i did.
@Baka-Raptor: you might have to shave…
@WAH: pantslessness is a time-honored tradition not monopolized by just any one show.
I was wondering if you were going to mention your post about Hiromi while reading this. :P
Again, lol ufotable.
Braless != pantless
It’s a whole nother set of aesthetics, I agree. But I was talking about the analysis of the content and not the content itself.
Or perhaps you already knew that. :P
Just imagining this was fan service. XD I’ve gotta check this thing out. ^^;
What, no Strike Witches?
But Kara no Kyoukai, Ice Cream and a analysis of friction? Win.
