Xam’d Episode 6 - Wisdom Is Scarce

August 20th, 2008

So in this episode of Xam’d, we have more build-up. The Sentan Island part of the plot did move forward and we got our charming Haru-does-5cm moment. Very aww.

Or is it more like Voices? Anyways, Haru received Akiyuki’s letter, and she relayed the news and letter to Akiyuki’s parents. Conveniently, dad also spilled the beans on his role during the war 17 years ago in which he unknowingly assisted the development of the humanoid weapons.

One thing this episode answers from the last is the motivation as to why Haru has joined the military–because it is the fastest way for her to get off the island. She is really way too good of a girl!

As a note time does fly between episodes, and even within at times. At the end of this one, Haru and Furuichi has enlisted to be mecha pilots. And so did Eva Unit 00. Or wait, is that Shinji Ikari and his mom?

Joking aside, Evangelion references are bound to be made with this episode as the oh-so-expectant prototype unit from the previous Xam’d wreckage explodes back into action. Albeit with a lot of humorous elements. The sad thing is just how it all had to happen right when Haru and Furuichi were doing their training on their robots near the research center. And hey, the robots are piloted by neural connection. The spike thing they stick into their helmets reminds me of the Matrix for a brief moment.

Anyways, back to the topic of this episode. Wisdom is scarce–we know humanoid weapons have those green munitions that explodes for a lot of hurt, like a laser. But sometimes they can be duds.

And some other times they’re…neither duds or green balls of death.

Wise man avoids both!

I don’t know whose idea was it to make that plasma air jet thing and have the “baby” Xam’d play with it, but that was nigh creepy.

On board the mail delivery vessel, Akiyuki was up to no good as usual.

I didn’t think she likes the thought of that. But I took that cap because there were no good feet shots. Armpit was the next best thing.

In this episode, Akiyuki finally started to use his Xam’d powers with some degree of control. He pulled out an exacto-knife-arm-thing and got Nakiami out of a tight spot, but what did she do in response? She went Lafiel on him.

Foolish Akiyuki! We have well-established that he is foolish, but I guess despite his youth, those old folks who revived the other Xam’d were worse.

We will end this mostly build-up episode with a small note about change in character design. Back when Eureka 7 was airing, Talho’s character design change was a bit of a shocker as she transformed from the walking fanservice that she was into something more conservative. It wasn’t really a bad change, but it pleased probably nobody and annoyed the few who liked her for her showyness. And even if people did like the new design, no one said much about it.

Talho’s voice actress is Michiko Neya, who voices Prosis Sukkaki in Xam’d. To be specific, in this episode she had a hair change.

She asked Kakisu about her hair, who earlier raised the comment about it. It turns out Kakisu didn’t like her new style as it reminded him his deceased mom too much. So the woman went back to her old ways.

I thought it was kind of amusing. Perhaps even a wise move.
