Xam’d Episode 2 - Just As Expected
Xam’d: Lost Memories is almost an anklebiter of an anime, but not quite.
There are less surprises about episode 2 than things I guessed right. The biggest surprise is that episode 2 in HD is even bigger than episode 1 in HD–now it’s up at 1612 megabytes. I guessed episode 2 will come out today (following a weekly schedule…) and it sure did. And it still looks gorgeous. The Top Downloads section of the PSN video store puts Xam’d episode 1 in the #1 slot, so I guess people do care about this not-so little VOD.
What is also not a surprise is that this show is following Eureka 7’s style of pulling the viewer along by dropping the audience in the thick of the setting and lore. The Nausicaa look-a-like spoke in this episode and pulled out some toys that do not do what you think they do just by looking at them.
Maybe I will break out the plot summary knife and a ton of screen caps? Nah. Just enjoy some pics. The story deserves to be told through actual animation…really, really good animation.
I mean, when a girl does a standing jump roundhouse, and you see it in that kind of detail, it leaves you wondering what the hell is going to be at the climax of the episode. Is it going to top this?
Sort of. But caps can’t do it justice.
And this is not just some action piece. There are some good direction going on too.
The colors don’t come through with these pics, but that explosion was like, woah Akira.
I also really liked this shot.
For the gadget freaks. Like, lol, I want one of these.
I want her stick, too.
This scene reminds me of Front Mission 4.
Is it me or she looks a whole lot better with her mouth shut?
Man, I know (and you know) Akiyuki is going to get on board that airship and travel the world, but I hope they don’t cut out those scenes with mom and dad.
So we get our archetypical Gendou Ikari type guy plus the archetypical military-serious-business-but-potentially-good/potentially-Macbeth kind of character. Looking over at some…thing. What is Xam’d? Maybe they’ll tell us sometime within the first 13 episodes, if we’re lucky.
So yes, what happened in episode 2 is exactly what you would guess and expect. Besides the white Xam’d doing some combat with its mighty morphin right arm, we also see some random carnage with all those omnious airships at the end of the first episode. During the conflict and chaos Akiyuki gets taken away by NausicaaNakiami while Haru watches, helpless.
Haru reminds me a lot of Yuno from Kurenai for some reason.
The second half of the episode (yea, that’s just half of episode 2!) wraps up the stuff a bit. Builds up the secondary characters some more. Chocolate pastry, tangerine and rusty water for everyone! While they converse about the events of episode 2, that is. And maybe someone needs a groin guard. And an ankle protector.
And that is that. No promises for episode 3, but we’ll see.

Again, the episode looks very interesting. The animation is really good as what I’ve heard, but I just can’t seem to fully enjoy the first episode because I downloaded a crappy version (video quality-wise) of that one.
