Okinawa Jamboree

July 17th, 2008

As I am writing this sentence, I am slowly working through a sata andagi. I’m pooped. I want to talk about and watch more Xam’d (it’s freaking cool). I also want to watch more Macross Frontier. Speaking of which, definitely go read this post; don’t you love it when a plan comes together? So much care and attention and love for a not-so-little franchise.

But because a sata andagi is NOT to be confused with a doughnut hole, I’ll do a photodump here. Incoming crappy cam pictures! (I really ought to go buy myself a Nokia N95 or something). So this post is going to be mostly pictures. Mostly from Xam’d.

LOL Mitsuwa summer events.

This is not a sata andagi–it’s made of sweet potato mixed with..something that turns it purple. I think sesame and something else. It’s fried and covered with more sesame. Unique taste…

Like I said, this is not to be confused with a doughnut hole. Protip: don’t eat it like one. More LOL Okinawa foods.

You need something to wash that stuff down, fer reals.

The rest of this post is random pictures from my camera I took last night while slowly examining Xam’d. It’s really a great show and very good production values. It’s also well-directed, well-designed, and splooges the mind upon a close look.

What role will this chick play? It’s like Eureka turned San and flies Nausicaa’s machine :x

This is not a photograph of a photoshopped photograph \o/

You know, from a character design perspective, Akiyuki’s mom was my favorite from the first episode. There’s something about her that really brings out the archetypical motherly familarity with a dash of mature womanhood. But I took this picture mainly because she’s holding a clothes hanger. What does that signify? The mom-of-wild-child-from-poor-family archetype completes with that little design detail. So Akiyuki skips out because he didn’t want to drop off that lunchbox with his dad because Akiyuki’s parents are separated. As in, pre-divorce? Not too clear.

Did she have a restraining order taken out on him?

It took at least two watch to figure out what was going on. Oh right, the hanger. But Akiyuki is not a naughty boy per se; perhaps with just a little streak. The hangar seems a little too much? Like she’s going to spank him? But that’s obviously not the case.

I also realize my phone cam was just not cutting it in terms of colors, and the TV room was just too dark (by design) for this. Greyscale anyone? Maybe she looks good in sephia?

I can live with a watch with just the hour hand.

Those bright streaks are actually from the show, not from the light in the room.

There were just way too many shots of Akiyuki’s butts. I guess something for the girls?

Well, something elses’ butts.

Gia talked about this briefly.

The way they animated this scene was very charming. Score another one for the fangirls.

This scene was pretty mind blowing in a way.

Almost Imperial Boy-like.

This scene, along with some of the scenes where Akiyuki bikes downhill, was very wow. Scrolling foreground with animated background on top of another background. Nice tricks.

Wait a second–that’s a moving, light-emitting display. And they have sticks shoving pegs on it? Wow. Did they gib Steve Jobs’ multitouch patent or what? It’s a staple steampunk trick to re-render a common day, high-tech device using more primative means. Does this count? Or is this actually just a high-tech device? I can’t tell.

More buses for JEL.

Bones have a thing for terrorists. But this was all Jin-Roh for me.

You know, people are right that this is pretty expensive, $4 for a rental of just one episode. But boy, was it worth it.

I really enjoyed the first episode myself; it was certainly worth the 4$. I’ll be getting the next one for sure. The animation was really well done and some of the scenes were just flat out awesome. However, I’m still not sure the series is $104 awesome. I hesitate to pay that for boxsets. Then again, if they keep this up they might just convince me it’s worth it.

Oh, and I’m not sure if you know or not (or care for that matter) but the Simplicity 0.11 link in your footer just goes to a link farm. Probably not where you want to be sending semi-curious people. Then again, perhaps I’m the only one on Earth who ever clicks anything down there.
